ボーディングスクール―大学受験の準備について
ボーディングスクールの大学受験準備は11年生（日本の高校2年生）から本格的に始まります。日本の高校と違って、ボーディングスクールでは大学進学のための専従スタッフが複数名います。その人たちが受験生たちの進学についてアドバイスを行うわけですが、その基本は彼らが担当する生徒について知ることから始まります。
大学進学専従スタッフをボーディングスクールでは、カレッジカウンセラーと呼びます。11年生も半ばを過ぎた時期、すなわち今の時期に担当カレッジカウンセラーが決まります。カウンセラーが最初に担当する生徒に行うことは、個別の面接ですが、親に対しても質問が発信されます。下記の質問は、ナビアンスという受験生の大学出願管理サイトに掲載されていますが、受験生の個別の家族環境や個性、特性に関するかなり突っ込んだ質問といえいると思います。
日本の受験生の場合、アドバイスを行うのは担任の先生だと思いますが、このような内容を親に対して質問することはおそらくないと思います。そのような個人的な状況が大学受験においては審査の対象にはなりません。しかし、アメリカでは受験生の出願校に対する志望の動機や、本人との相性は極めて重要です。それらが基本となって、本人のエッセイが作られ、その出来栄えが受験合否に大きく影響します。故に、エッセイの基本となるような下記事項については、カレッジカウンセラーは知っておく必要があります。
